History

CAPULTEC was founded in 2009 to support Thermon Canada and provide Project Management, resource management and engineering services for the Kearl Oil Sands project.

The name CAPULTEC was derived from a CAble PULling TEnsion Calculator software program developed by Jean-Marc.  The design of underground electrical duct banks requires careful planning and consideration.

To ensure safe installation, cable pulling tension calculations are performed to verify maximum limits are not exceeded.  In addition, calculations for conduit fill, sidewall bearing pressure and maximum straight pull are often required.  These calculations can be a labor-intensive.  This is especially true, considering the maximum tension obtained when pulling in one direction often differs from that obtained when pulling in the opposite direction.  Therefore, it is required to calculate the pulling tension from both directions.

To complete this task in a more efficient manner, Jean-Marc developed an Excel version to perform the calculations based on NEC and other industry-leading standards.  The software was featured in an article (‘Ease The Tension’) in the 2001 publication of Ontario Technologist.  The Excel spreadsheet was later developed into a software program, licensed and marketed under the company, CAPULTEC.
